Guide Specification — Terrazzino Micro-Terrazzo Floor System

Division 09 — Finishes > 09 60 00 Flooring > 09 67 00 Fluid-Applied Flooring > 09 67 23 Resinous Flooring

Why this section

Terrazzino is a thin (approx. 60 mil), self-leveling, seamless decorative epoxy floor system that is not ground and polished after installation. MasterFormat 09 66 23 Resinous Matrix Terrazzo is written around NTMA thin-set terrazzo systems — nominally 1/4 in.–3/8 in. thick, trowel-applied, and mechanically ground and polished after cure. Specifying Terrazzino under 09 66 23 would import NTMA requirements (minimum thickness, grinding/polishing schedule, aggregate gradation) that a thin, self-leveling, non-ground system is not designed to meet. 09 67 23 Resinous Flooring covers fluid-applied, self-leveling resinous floor systems and is the better fit for this product.

PART 1 — GENERAL

1.1  SUMMARY

Section includes a self-leveling, seamless, decorative Terrazzino Micro-Terrazzo floor system comprising a moisture vapor barrier or primer, pigmented epoxy base coat, decorative self-leveling micro-terrazzo layer, and a urethane or wax polymer finish coat, installed over prepared concrete substrates.

3.2  MOISTURE TESTING

  • Test for moisture vapor emission rate (MVER) per ASTM F1869 (calcium chloride): maximum 20 lb/24 h/1,000 sq ft. Perform this test only where HVAC has operated continuously for at least one week before and during testing.
  • Or test in-situ relative humidity per ASTM F2170: 75%–95% RH acceptable for the moisture vapor barrier.
  • Perform a minimum of one test of each type per 1,000 sq ft of floor area.
  • Do not proceed with installation until moisture test results are within the limits above and have been reviewed by the Installer.

Specifier note — not contract text

These are the moisture vapor barrier's stated qualification range, not a documented pass/fail threshold for the assembled floor system as a whole. Confirm with the manufacturer whether a different (e.g., stricter) limit applies to the finished Terrazzino system before publishing this as an acceptance criterion.

3.3  PREPARATION

  • Diamond grind the substrate to a minimum surface profile of CSP 3 (ICRI) — grind as flat as possible.
  • Vacuum thoroughly to remove all grinding dust before proceeding.
  • Protect adjacent surfaces, equipment, and finishes not scheduled to receive the floor system.

3.4  CRACK AND JOINT REPAIR

  • Non-moving cracks and surface voids: grind open, fill with crack paste / pinhole filler slightly proud of the surrounding surface, then grind flush — “filled, flush, and flat.”
  • Moving (structural) joints and saw-cut control joints: [joint treatment detail — sealant product, joint width, and whether the resinous system is run through or terminated at the joint]
  • Do not bridge known moving joints with the resinous system without a detailed joint treatment reviewed by the Architect.

Specifier note — not contract text

See /architects/details for a typical joint-treatment drawing; sealant product and joint width are flagged NEEDS DATA there as well and must be confirmed per project.

3.5  APPLICATION

Mix and apply each component per the manufacturer's current technical data sheet and the schedule below. Mix only the quantity that can be placed within pot life.

Terrazzino Urethane Topcoat2–3 mils [NEEDS DATA: planning value]Data pendingNotched squeegee + backroll
  1. Apply moisture vapor barrier (or primer, where permitted) in two coats with a notched squeegee; prime twice to reduce pinholing in later layers.
  2. Inspect base coat for pinholes and fill before proceeding; sand with 60–80 grit and vacuum before placing the decorative layer.
  3. Spread the mixed Terrazzino micro-terrazzo material at 60 mils with a 50–60 mil notched squeegee or a wire gauge rake set to 1/20 in.–1/16 in. A 3/8 in. V-notch squeegee applies too little material for this layer and shall not be used.
  4. Allow the micro-terrazzo layer to settle 5–10 minutes, then loop-roll with an 18 in. looped roller to level the surface and remove tool marks.
  5. Order a minimum of 10% additional material beyond the calculated quantity to avoid running short mid-pour.
  6. Before applying a urethane topcoat, sand the cured micro-terrazzo layer with a 100–200 grit screen and vacuum.
  7. Where Terrazzino Cera is specified instead of a urethane topcoat, apply without sanding (3–4 coats, buffed between coats) or after sanding 100 then 200 grit (5–6 coats, buffed between coats); this route cannot be sanded flat after application, so correct any unlevel areas in the micro-terrazzo layer before finishing.

3.6  CURE

StageValue (at 70°F)
Pot life (1½ gal volume)15–25 minutes
Tack free (dry to touch)4–6 hours
Recoat or topcoat6–9 hours
Light foot traffic12–24 hours
Full cure (heavy traffic)2–5 days

Source: Terrazzino Specification sheet (snapshot; revision/date not stated) · retrieved 2026-10-30

Do not permit foot traffic, equipment, or furnishings on the floor until the applicable cure stage above has elapsed.

3.7  FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

  • Verify ambient and substrate conditions meet Section 1.6 Field Conditions before and during each application step.
  • Inspect each coat for pinholes, bubbles, and foreign debris before proceeding to the next layer; repair before recoating.
  • Test unfamiliar notched-squeegee or rake equipment on a scrap area to confirm actual yield before use on the floor.
  • Verify cured micro-terrazzo thickness and finish coat application against the schedule in Section 3.5.

3.8  PROTECTION

Protect completed floor system from traffic, construction debris, and other trades until full cure has elapsed per Section 3.6. Barricade and post signage as required to prevent access during cure.

3.9  CLEANING

Remove masking, protective coverings, and construction debris from the finished floor. Clean per the manufacturer's maintenance guidance before Owner occupancy; avoid solvents or abrasive methods not approved by the manufacturer.
